Support Ashraf

Crime Against Humanity
Brutal massacre and suppression of Iraqi forces against defenseless residents of Camp Ashraf

H.E. Barak Obama,
President of the United States of America
The White House
Washington, D.C.

Dear President,
Through his agents in Iraq, the Iranian regime’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, took revenge for the Iranian people’s uprising by massacring defenseless residents of Ashraf. He wishfully thinks that by targeting Ashraf the uprising would cease.

The aggression against Ashraf that was carried out under direct order of Nouri al-Maliki is not only a clear violation of international conventions and the assurances of the governments of Iraq and the US regarding the protection of Ashraf residents, but is also considered a crime against humanity.

Thus far, more than 450 Ashraf residents have been injured while 9 others have been slain. A number of those wounded are in critical condition. Also 36 others have been abducted, tortured and imprisoned by the Iraqi government. In protest to this crime, the residents of Camp Ashraf and the ones taken hostage by the Iraqi government have gone on unlimited hunger strike.

While recalling the April 24, 2009 European Parliament resolution on the rights and humanitarian situation of protected persons in Ashraf, as well as the warnings of Amnesty International and the International Federation of Human Rights on this issue, we urge the US government and President Barack Obama personally to act on American obligations pertaining to the protection of Ashraf residents and also respect for international law.

While supporting the hunger strike by freedom-loving people across the world, we support the demands of Ashraf residents as following:

1. Leaving of all Iraqi forces from Camp Ashraf;
2. Protection of Ashraf to be assumed by U.S. forces, who have disarmed and signed agreements with every single one of Ashraf residents about protecting them until the determination of their final status;
3. Presence of lawyers and international human rights organizations in Ashraf, which has been banned for the past 7 months;
4. Presence of a representative of the UN Security Council or Secretary General in Ashraf for talks about the determination of the final status of Ashraf residents;
5. Compliance of the Iraqi government with the April 24, 2009 resolution of the European Parliament on the humanitarian situation of Ashraf residents;
6. Prosecution and punishment of parties who ordered or perpetrated the brutal attacks and massacre in Camp Ashraf by an international tribunal for crimes against humanity.

Bloggers Call for the Support of the Legitimate Rights of Ashraf Political Refugees

We still remember those tragic days of the summer of 1988, when the children of our country were executed because they fought for freedom and humanity in Iran. Those days, the world watched the massacre of Iranian political prisoners in stillness. Today our silence will further encourage the dictators and tyrants and that we cannot afford anymore.

Following the orders of Khamenei to the Iraqi president to fulfill their “mutual agreement” during their meeting in Tehran, and after further visits by several Iranian envoys to Iraq , the Iraqi forces have tremendously increased the pressure on 3500 members of the Iranian opposition who reside in Ashraf city in Iraq.

According to the news, after banning the basic needs including water and medication, the Iraqi forces have now forbidden any sort of traffic, including banning visits to the city by families of the residents of Ashraf, who come from Iran after facing many difficulties, as well as journalists and lawyers of the residents of Ashraf. According to recent news, Iraqi forces have prohibited a medical team who were about to carry out emergency operations on a cancer patient and four others. This is a clear violation of international agreements, and an indirect order to massacre the Iranian opposition members in Ashraf city.

According to Mr. Al-Rubaie, the ultimate goal of the Iraqi government is to attack the residents of Ashraf, arrest their leaders and isolate and imprison the rest in different camps, forcefully extradite some of them to Iran and start trials for others in Iraq. This is while all the opposition members in Ashraf City had surrendered their arms to the US forces right at the beginning of occupation of Iraq and have been granted the “protected” status under the fourth Geneva Convention. All Ashraf City residents are under protection of US forces and no one has the right to send them to another country including Iran nor can anyone displace them inside Iraq.

The American forces received a written agreement from the Iraqi government, ensuring their commitment to the rights of Ashraf City residents, right before handing over their protection to the Iraqi forces. However, the recent violations have clearly shown that the Iraqi government has no intention of abiding to those agreements. This only indicates the extents of an appalling deal with the Iranian regime, which is strongly condemned by us.

We, the undersigned, appeal to the entire international community and personalities to take an urgent action and prevent another humanitaian catastrophe. We strongly urge the US forces to prevent a humanitarian disaster by immediately taking back the protection of Ashraf city from the Iraqi forces, who are obviously carrying out the orders received from Iran.

We believe that the residents of Ashraf, are human beings regardless of their political beliefs and opinions. No government can violate their legitimate rights under any circumstances. We ask all the bloggers, defenders of freedom, and those who care for the human rights, to stand up for the rights of the people of Ashraf and avert another summer 1988 massacre, this time in Iraq.

Defending the rights of the 3500 residents of Ashraf City against the conspiracies of the Iranian government is a major assessment of our standing against the barbaric actions of the fundamentalist Islamic regime of Iran. Our union at this time is a loud and clear message to the dictators and murderers governing Iran, who have executed more than 400 last year alone, and have brought nothing but poverty, misery, torture, execution, and drug-addiction to the people of Iran over the last 30 years.
